To all our Members and Friends...
2007 proved to be a very busy and exciting year for Hunterstown
and 2008 will
be no different!
Our first-ever monument in Hunterstown will be dedicated on Wednesday,
July 2nd, 2008 at 11: 00 am.
To read more about this event, please check our website
where our schedule of events is posted.
The Churchill Family and the Michigan
Wolverines
are
busy raising the monies for this monument which is being made by
Codori Memorials in Gettysburg. What a beautiful memorial it will be!
HHS had a booth at the Gettysburg Reenactment in 2007
as well as a table set right out front of the Dobbin House
for the Remembrance Day Parade.
We met many of our friends that day and
gained a few new members as well!
General Grant, General Lee and even General Custer stopped by
and promised their support at our Annual Walking Tour in July.
Our
THANKS to Jim Phelps, panoramic photographer, Linda Cleveland,
local historian, and John Horner for their help manning the tables.
Also in November, The Historic Tate Farm hosted
"An Evening with the Grants",
a 3 part play,
Larry
and Connie Clowers, an outstanding couple who are experienced
re-enactors, actors, and living historians have graciously donated their time
in support of our efforts here in
Hunterstown.
Our
THANKS to them, and also Mark and Shelia Gladfelter,
and my husband, Roger, all who had "speaking parts" in the performance
as well as lending a helping
hand on the set and with the costumes.
Proceeds from the performance were donated
to the Churchill/Custer Monument fund.
Also in the fall, we saw Straban Township step up and put some
wording
to
our "Historic Village Overlay",
which will go a long way to help protect our town.
Our THANKS to Fred and Marcie Kammerer for their help
in expediting this
project!
Congratulations are in order for one
of our members, Sharon Hamm,
who ran for Township Supervisor and was voted in!
Sharon will be a great advocate for Hunterstown!
Nationally known civil war historian, Ed Bearss, visited the Historic
Tate Farm last November and then took a walking tour of the battlefield.
Dean Schultz, of the Adams County Land Conservancy, was instrumental
in
bringing the tour to Hunterstown. Our THANKS to Dean!
Word is spreading around town as Hunterstown Historical Society
has been asked to send speakers out to other groups.
In January, Roger and I spoke at the
Biglerville Historical Society.
Troy Harman spoke in Michigan last fall and just recently,
Troy also spoke at the Gettysburg
Civil War Roundtable.
Mike Vallone will also be traveling to the Lancaster Civil War Roundtable
in May to
speak about "The Battle of Hunterstown."
In June, Historic Gettysburg-Adams County will host an evening meeting
at the G.A. R. Building in Gettysburg
with "Hunterstown" being the topic
of discussion. We will post these events on our website.
Civil War Preservation Trust in Washington has been working with the
Adams County Land Conservancy to put Hunterstown on a high priority
list
because
of the imminent threat of development.
Dick Montfort, president of The Land Conservancy
has been a great advocate for Hunterstown.
We are most appreciative for
all their efforts on behalf on Hunterstown. THANK YOU!
We would like to THANK John and Carol Marymont
for their outstanding job as Membership Coordinators.
Unfortunately, they both have had to step down because of health
issues.
Thankfully,
they will continue on as members and supporters!
Speaking of "supporters", HHS is honored to have J. D. Petruzzi,
"Plenty of Blame to Go Around" author, as a
new member!
J.
D. will be here in Hunterstown for the monument dedication in July
and will also be signing copies of his new book.
Our THANKS to David!
With us also will be Dick
Hamilton Author, "Oh Hast Thou Forgotten",
Michigan Cavalry in the
Civil War: The Gettysburg Campaign
Also, we have two new members from the UK. Barry and Steven Dawson.
They visited Hunterstown last year
and wanted to know how they could support us.
Both father and son became new members
AND both
donated monies to the monument fund!
We will meet them both in July, here in Hunterstown!
THANK you SO MUCH!
So as you all can see, great strides our being made to save
and protect our historic village of Hunterstown.
Our THANKS to all our dedicated members
and friends,
both
near and far,
without
ALL of you, and your continued support and membership,
we would not see such great success here in HUNTERSTOWN!
There is nothing better than to leave a LEGACY for future generations.
Sincerely,
Laurie Harding, President
